Topics include use and interpretation of diagnostic tests, new information on elimination of adult heartworms and microfilariae, prevention failures and potential resistance, the role of Wolbachia in heartworm infection, and how we can better manage heartworm disease by eliminating Wolbachia.Canine and feline heartworm disease (part II)Continuation of above, with an emphasis on feline heartworm disease.New Strategies for controlling fleas, ticks and important vector-borne diseasesControlling fleas, ticks and vector-borne diseases is an ever increasing challenge. Speaker Bios
Kimberly Darling, LVT, CCRP
Kim graduated from Northern Virginia Community College in 1999 with an associates degree in veterinary science. She has worked as a licensed veterinary technician in both private practice, referral and emergency for small animals. She joined Veterinary Referral & Critical Care in 2007 working in the surgical department and saw the beneficial effects of rehabilitation. Due to her enthusiasm and passion for physical rehab, she has completed her certification in canine rehabilitation from the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Ralph Harvey
Dr. Ralph Harvey teaches anesthesiology at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. He has served there as the Director of Small Animal Surgical Services and as a member of the University Faculty Senate. His advanced training included internship, residency and fellowship at Cornell's Veterinary and Medical Colleges. He has also worked in private small animal practice. He is certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists as a Veterinary Anesthesiologist, has served as the Executive Secretary of the ACVA, and as a member of the ACVA Board of Directors. Dr. Harvey has received the UTCVM Brandy Memorial Award for “sensitivity and compassion for veterinary patients and the ability to instill these qualities in veterinary students.” He has also received the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association and the UTCVM Outstanding Alumni Non-Practice Career Award. His community and public service activities have included work with regional science fair programs, Explorer Scouting, The Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, and regional environmental advocacy.
Dr. Keith A. Hnilica DVM, MS, MBA, DACVD - Lakeside Veterinary Academy Pet Wellness Center
Dr. Keith Hnilica graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1993. After graduating, Dr. Hnilica completed a small animal internship and a residency in Dermatology at Auburn University. He received his Masters of Veterinary Medicine and became a board certified member of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology in 1997. Dr. Hnilica was selected into the University of Georgia’s Lilly Teaching Fellowship Program and in 2007 he completed an MBA program at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Hnilica was on faculty at the University of Georgia for 3 years and at The University of Tennessee for 8 years. Dr. Hnilica is the author of itchnot.com, an author of Small Animal Dermatology; A color Atlas and Therapeutic Guide 2nd Ed, which has been translated into 7 languages.
In 2009, Dr, Hnilica left the University to develop a progressive referral and learning center focusing on cutting-edge medicine with exceptional client service and the absolute best patient care possible. The Pet Wellness Center and Lakeside Veterinary Academy are located in the Tennessee Smoky Mountain area and can be found on the web at www.PetsLivingLonger.com.
Karen Inzana, DVM
Originally a native of Knoxville, TN, Dr. Inzana was a member of the second graduating class from the Universtiy of TN College of Veterinary Medicine. After a short period in private practice, she moved to California for her residency in Neurology/Neurosurgery at UC Davis. Realizing that she was destined for Academic Medicine, Dr. Inzana then moved to the University of Wisconsin, Madison where she obtained first her MS and then PhD in experimental neuropathology. She then returned to the southeast and joined the neurotoxicology group at Virginia Tech for the last 24 years where she has climbed the ranks from assistant to full professor. She is the author of over 20 book chapters and 30 peer reviewed journal articles. Her current interests are in the area of veterinary education. Her current title is Director of Assessment and her role is to redesign the ways that senior students are evaluated during their 4th year clinical rotations. In her spare time she is the mother of four children and one grandchild. She enjoys horseback riding with her daughter and gardening.
